Welcome to author Kamilla Benko! I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about herself and her new middle grade novel, The Unicorn Quest.
I love her answers, and I know you will too.

Q & A with Author Kamilla Benko About The Unicorn Quest
1. When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I didn’t know I wanted to be an author until I was in my twenties, but I always knew I wanted to be a writer. Specifically, I remember being five years old and following my parents around the house with a pen and a sheet of paper, asking them how to spell every single word. I carefully wrote down each letter. However, I didn’t understand that the letters had to follow a certain sequence to make a word, and so my first story (something about a cat) was just a page covered in random letters. Like a word search, but with absolutely no order. I was devastated when my mom couldn’t read the story back to me!
2. Is there anything about writing for children that you find particularly challenging?
The short answer is no. To quote Ursula Nordstrom, “I am a former child and I haven’t forgotten a thing.” Kids are wonderfully plastic—just because they’re young doesn’t mean life doesn’t happen to them. There’s no need to truncate vocabulary or shy away from tough themes. That said, I do sometimes catch myself wanting to be lazy, and describe a certain emotion in adult terms, like the feeling of driving a car for the first time. It’s not fair to expect that experience to mean anything for an eleven-year-old, so I have to dig deeper and find a different way to explain that particular sense of sudden awareness of power between your hands. A kid might, instead, for example, think of the first time he or she tried on ice skates and became aware that they had knives strapped to their feet.
3. If you could visit any time or place, when and where would you go?
This is a cruel question to ask a former history major! I’d like to go to Salisbury, England, the day they finished Stonehenge so I can see and ask how they got the stones there! Maybe I would even end up meeting the historical Merlin.
4. What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to travel to new places, be it a country across an ocean or a park only a mile away from home. There’s something about growing the map of your world that is at once humbling and inspiring.
5. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would love the ability to create more time! That way, I would finally be able to catch up on my To Be Read pile!
6. Do you have any new books in the works that you can tell us about?
I’m currently working on Books 2 and 3 in The Unicorn Quest trilogy. I’ve known the ending for years, and am excited to be tackling these scenes now! Fair Warning: Claire and Sophie have a lot they have to accomplish before the series can end!
Thanks for the great interview, Kamilla!
