About Why Not Me?

From the author of the beloved New York Times bestselling book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and the creator and star of The Mindy Project comes a collection of essays that are as hilarious and insightful as they are deeply personal.
In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.

Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who’ve never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.

My Thoughts on Why Not Me?

I picked this book up for several reasons. First, I loved Mindy’s character on The Office. Second, I find her somewhat interesting as far as celebrities go (which is saying something—I don’t usually care about celebrities) since she’s not the typical Hollywood starlet with blonde hair and blue eyes. Third, I keep seeing rave reviews of her books, along with similar books from other celebrities. Fourth (final one, I promise), I’ve never read a collection of essays from a celebrity before and I wanted to find out what I was missing out on.

Not much, apparently.

It’s like going to a party, meeting someone new, then regretting starting a conversation with them because they won’t stop talking about themselves. The format of the book didn’t click for me. The writing is great, but I’m not that curious about Mindy’s day-to-day life to read an entire book about it. She talks about meeting the president, what a typical work day looks like for her, and gives personal anecdotes about best friends, relationships, and other goings-on in her life.

If you like celebrities or want to learn more about Mindy as a person, you’ll probably like this book. It’s funny and you’ll get to know her more the way her friends do.

I’m not sure what I expected from Why Not Me?, but I was disappointed. Simply put, it’s not my genre.

Content: Cursing (including a few f-words), vulgarity, and talking about sex (both on-screen and off).
