#FinishingRA: Finishing School Read Along Update #4

I can’t believe the FINISHING SCHOOL READ-ALONG is over!  It was hosted by Tressa @ Wishful Endings and I (Dena @ Batch of Books)! It was such a fun series to read and now I can’t wait for the next book!

Make sure you enter the giveaway at the bottom of the page, since today is the last day!

This week we read chapters 9-16 of Waistcoats and Weaponry, and it was a crazy, emotional ride!

Waistcoats and Weaponry:

Class is back in session…

Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style–with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what–or who–they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.

Gather your poison, steel tipped quill, and the rest of your school supplies and join Mademoiselle Geraldine’s proper young killing machines in the third rousing installment in the New York Times bestselling Finishing School Series by steampunk author, Gail Carriger.

In this bestselling sequel to New York Times bestselling Etiquette & Espionage, class is back in session with more petticoats and poison, tea trays and treason. Gail’s distinctive voice, signature humor, and lush steampunk setting are sure to be the height of fashion this season.

My Thoughts on the second half:

My thoughts about the characters
The characters had me in such turmoil!  I was flabbergasted at how some things played out.  I was especially disappointed in what happened with Felix.  He’s one of my favorite characters!  But I was happy for many of the others.

My thoughts about the plot
Completely unpredictable!  Every prediction I made after the first half was entirely wrong.  I was literally blindsided by so many things, but honestly, I don’t know why I even tried to make predictions.  Gail is unpredictable.  There is no telling how her mind works.

My least favorite part, so far (if any) SPOILERS!
The part where Sophronia abandons Felix on the tracks. I felt so sad about the whole thing.  And then again when his father returns to attack the train and Sophronia knew that he betrayed her by telling his father too much.  I think she realized in that moment that she and Felix would never be able to make it work.

My favorite part so far (SPOILERS!)
The ending was super emotional and serious, which I hadn’t expected, but I also loved.  I wasn’t sure how to feel right after I finished the book, but I think this has been my favorite book in the series.  I loved what happened with Captain Niall and Sidheag and I wanted to scream “I KNEW IT!” at anyone that would listen.

Favorite quotes (take from the ARC)

“If anyone saw Monique, a well-dressed woman of quality, dangling from the doorway, they apparently assumed everyone had problems in life and moved on.” (Location 2360)

“Like some strange form of fruit from a floating trifle, the heart of the flywaymen’s dirigible spilled forth vast numbers of crystalline valve frequensors.” (Location 2715)

“In fact, she had a real need to consult with Vieve on much of what they had learned, and stolen, and crashed into.” (Location 2803)

Predictions for the next book?
Absolutely none.  I have no idea where the plot is going, what Sophronia is going to do, or what characters to appear in the next book.

Final thoughts
The ending was so weird because it was sad and serious in many ways, yet it still drew me in and made me want more.  I can’t wait for the next book to see where all this is going!

Werewolves!  What about the werewolves?  What will happen with Soap?  What will happen with Felix?  Why do I have to wait an entire year for the next book?!

Your turn!  What do you think of the book so far? Make sure you enter the giveaway too!

I've got all those questions too. So many questions. I hate waiting! Lol! I loved that quote about Monique and Vieve. There definitely weren't as many humorous one-liners, but there were definitely still some sweet and hilarious moments.

I am definitely going to have to read her other books in the interim so I don't die from Gail Carriger withdrawal. 🙂

I agree the parts with Felix are sad because he is an interesting and likable character, but I wasn't too surprised. Their loyalties make a relationship between them a difficult proposition to begin with. But like you said, who knows where the author will take things, she is just full of surprises. The events surrounding Soap were definitely a surprise and I am anxious to know where things go there. But I have no doubt that whatever happens, Sophronia will continue to cause havor. 😉

I think I always knew that things with Felix wouldn't work out, but I always hoped they would. I really liked Felix! I still like him, and a small, delusional part of me keeps hoping.

First off, I'm thrilled that Sidheag and Captain Niall got together.
It was also really surprising that Sophronia indentured herself to the dewan. I'm really looking forward to seeing how that plays out, as well as seeing how Soap handles being a werewolf.
Finally, I was sad about Felix but I can see how it would cause difficulties. I wonder what he was about to say at the end? But if Sophronia doesn't end up with Felix, it'd be great to see her marry Pillover.

Me too! I loved that part! I was so happy for Sidheag and the Captain! I was also surprised by the indenture, but Sophronia proved that she will do anything for her friends. It will be interesting to see how this all works out!

And Pillover? Ha ha! I guess I had never thought of those two actually getting together since he is such a downer (in an adorable way) and he's two years younger than Sophronia. But they would make a hilarious couple, that's for sure. Never a dull moment with those two. 🙂
