Book Review: How to Draw Incredible Dinosaurs, by Kristen McCurry (Author) and Juan Calle (Illustrator)

Young artists will find tons of inspiration in these fun, accessible
drawing books, produced in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution.
Easy to follow step by step instructions show how to create awesome
drawings, with next steps clearly highlighted.

Being an artist, I am always interested in seeing kids books that promote or teach drawing.  Most of the time, I am disappointed in the quality of the illustrations, but this is not most times.

How to Draw Incredible Dinosaurs is a 64 page full color tutorial that outlines easy to follow steps for kids to draw their own amazing dinosaurs.  Juan Calle’s drawings are spectacular.  He obviously has a solid background in drawing and creating lifelike artwork.  The drawings are realistic, proportionate, and detailed, all while remaining easy for children to follow.  He includes five or six drawing steps on each two page spread dedicated to every dinosaur.  The dinosaurs in the book are not rendered in color, but are detailed pencil outline drawings.

In addition to having absolutely fantastic artwork to follow, Incredible Dinosaurs also contains facts and information about each animal.  Kristen McCurry’s informative blurbs on each page tell you the dinosaur’s name, what period they lived in, and a few interesting facts about them.

The only downside to this book is that there are no tips about drawing included.  It would have been nice to have some suggestions on how to build the forms.

All in all, I would give this book 4.5 stars!  It is an amazing how to draw book.  Highly recommended for the budding artist and dinosaur lover.

I received a free Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
