Serafina and the Splintered Heart by Robert Beatty

Age Range: 8 – 12 years | Grade Level: 3 – 7 | Series: Serafina (#3) | Hardcover: 368 pages | Publisher: Disney-Hyperion (July 3, 2017)

Wow. Honestly, I’m speechless.

Okay, maybe not speechless (like THAT would ever happen!), but I’m blown away. My socks are officially knocked off. 💥

And really, I shouldn’t be surprised, especially after I enjoyed the first book so much.

After the major twist at the beginning (yes, the beginning), I was hooked. Once I started reading, there was no stopping. I read the entire book in one day because I just couldn’t put it down. I told my kids “good luck” and disappeared into the story.

The twist at the beginning caught me completely off guard. And considering how many books I’ve read, that’s not an easy feat. Even later, when the situation changes again, I was still reeling from the way the book started. And I couldn’t help worrying that Serafina went through everything just to lose it all in the end.

To make a long review short, I LOVED this book.

It kept me on the edge of my seat and glued to the page. I was disappointed that I finished it so quickly, but I HAD to know what happened!

If you haven’t read this series yet, you are sorely missing out. This is the most intense fun I’ve had reading a middle-grade book in a long time. But be forewarned, these books are scary! My neighbor and I have both been reading the series as the books released, but neither of us will give them to our kids.

On that note, if your kid likes to read late at night with a flashlight and scary books don’t bother them, then this series is perfect. If you’re unsure, then read the book yourself and use your best judgment.

Serafina and the Splintered Heart is the third book in the Serafina series, but we’ll see more of our feisty heroine in future stories. Whether as a main character or in a supporting role is yet to be seen. I can’t wait to read whatever Robert Beatty comes up with next!

Cover Love:

I’ve loved all the covers for the books in this series. They give you a hint of what the story entails, but they don’t ruin anything and they don’t represent any one specific scene. I like the silhouette of Serafina, how she’s kind of ghostly, hinting at her life in the shadows of Biltmore.

Content:

Some scary scenes and suspenseful situations.

I haven’t read this series yet, but have been to the Biltmore Estate many times. I hope to win this for my classroom bookshelf. My students would love it!

I bet they would love it! I’ve never been to Biltmore, but I want to go. It’s just a few hours from where I live, so it’s doable, but I don’t want to take my toddler, so I’ll probably have to wait a little longer before going.
