Behind the Scenes (Apart from the Crowd #1) by Jen Turano
Age Range: Adult (OK for teens, too) | Series: Apart From the Crowd (Book 1) | Paperback: 352 pages | Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (April 18, 2017)
Yes! Wallflowers, nefarious murder plots, scandal, and plenty of fashion faux pas make this book another splendid addition to Jen Turano’s lighthearted and humorous collection. Jen Turano hasn’t disappointed me yet. I’ve read almost all of her books and I’ve loved them all.
I loved that Permilia is a wallflower! As a wallflower myself, I found her easy to relate to. I especially loved the parts where she froze up and lost the ability to speak coherently, as well as the situations where she felt inexplicably comfortable with another person (Asher Rutherford, for example). Both of those situations are common for shy people, and I thought Turano did an excellent job of portraying them.
This book has all the banter, quirkiness, costumes, and adventures over tea you’ve come to expect from one of Turano’s books. It’s a little more sinister in nature than some of her previous works and there’s a pretty big surprise at the end.
One of the things I like the most about this book is Permilia’s independence. She’s accepted spinsterhood, but she hasn’t let it stop her from pursuing a fulfilling life. She has a job, is involved in charity, and refuses to be steamrolled into submission by anyone.
I also loved Asher. He’s new to the whole “independent woman” thing and it takes him some time to get used to Permilia’s headstrong ways and ambitious ideas. His self-identity crisis was hilarious. The part where he realized he’s (almost) a dandy and wants to toughen up his image had me laughing out loud.
Just a side note that this is the first book in a series, but none of Jen Turano’s books are dependent on each other. You can pick up any one of them and have a confusion-free read. Although I would highly recommend reading her other books for the sheer entertainment value they hold.

Download Jen’s FREE novellas
Both of these novellas kick off their respective series. They’re short, snappy, and fun. They make for a nice quick read that you can fit in one afternoon. I got hooked on Jen’s books when I downloaded and read Gentleman of Her Dreams back in 2012 when it first came out. I’ve been a fan ever since!
