Q & A with M. Tara Crowl

How did you come up with the idea for this series?

I was listening to an audio book that briefly mentioned the scenario of being able to make three wishes from a genie, and I started to imagine what it would be like to be a genie. I thought it would be terrible! You’d be trapped inside an oil lamp with no friends, no fresh air, and no freedom. You could only go to Earth when someone rubbed the lamp, and your trip would end as soon as you’d granted their wishes. The idea of that infuriated me!

From there, I started to dream up the character of Eden. She’s a twelve-year-old genie who’s in love with the world, and desperate to live there. But she can’t do that until she completes her career as a genie, which isn’t going to happen any time soon. She lives a charmed life, but she wants a normal one. That was where the idea for Eden’s Wish began.

Which character is your favorite to write?

I love writing Eden. She’s brave and incredibly smart, but also playful and mischievous. And I love seeing the world through her eyes. Since she’s lived inside a lamp for her whole life, she sees everything on Earth with wonder: the sun, the ocean, animals, everything green and growing. Writing about those things from her perspective reminds me to appreciate them for myself.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Probably cookies and cream.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I wanted to be an author as a kid, but when I was in high school, I decided that I wanted to make movies instead. I went to film school at the University of Southern California, and then I worked in Hollywood for a couple years, first for a producer and a literary manager, and then in the motion picture literary department of a talent agency. That was when my childhood dream of writing books was reawakened. A big part of my job was reading and helping develop screenplays, and I realized that I’d never be happy if I didn’t at least try to write my own stories. That was when I knew I had to go for it, or I’d always regret it. So I dropped everything in LA and moved to Sydney, Australia for a Master’s program in Creative Writing.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I’d like to be able to completely understand how other people feel, and why they think what they think. I guess that’s mind-reading, but I don’t like the connotations of mind-reading. Let’s call it super-powerful empathy. I think the world could use more of that.

With Brightly’s plasma shield around the lamp, Eden has no way home. Left without a choice, she escapes the lab and goes on the run. After her daring exit, Eden finds herself on the streets of Paris–home to Electra’s headquarters. Left in a strange city with a price on her head (courtesy of scheming Brightly), Eden has to keep her wits about her. She dons a chic disguise and flits around Paris incognito, investigating Brightly Tech. Assisted by Pepper and her old adversary Bola, as well as some new friends, Eden embarks on a quest to retrieve the lamp and protect the secrets of the genie legacy.
