A Guest Post by Heather Macht
OK, I’m 33 years old, but I have a confession…I love picture books! I actually prefer them to any other type of book, which probably explains why I became a picture book author. Their vivid pictures capture my attention, while the stories make me laugh and warm my heart.
With that said, my favorite types of picture books happen to be around my favorite holiday: Halloween!
As you can imagine, walking into any bookstore this month has made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Last week, while in the children’s section of Barnes and Noble, drooling over all the Halloween books, I stumbled across Vampirina Ballerina!
The name alone sold me. OK,…I admit it; it was the glittery-pink letters on the cover, too! However, not falling into the cliché of “judging a book by its cover”, I read it and instantly found my original thought and love for the book was spot-on!
Vampirina wants to be a ballerina. However, she has to take a night class (of course), has to make sure to hide her fangs enough to keep from scaring her classmates and also has to practice all of the ballerina moves. She even has to be in a show! This is an absolute-perfect book that that is not only cute and well-illustrated but teaches reaching for your dreams, whether or not the odds are against you. I don’t want to give away too much, especially the ending, but I did laugh out loud and made a lot of “oooooh’s” and “aaaaah’s” while reading the book. I’m sure some passer-by’s thought I was a little crazy.
In any sense, if you have a little “vamp” lover at home, or a ballerina lover….or if you are just like me and love a great picture book, you must check out Vampirina Ballerina! You won’t be disappointed. It’s seriously fa-BOO-lous! Yep; I just went there 😉
