About the Book:
Play? Yay! is a book my mom wrote for kids. I’m a toddler, and I like to read. I sit and look at pictures or point to my favorite pages. Do you like books like that? Then this book is for you too! The best part about this book is that you can read it with people like moms, dads, or grandparents. Get Play? Yay! today for fun, rhymes, and the gift of imagination.
Interview with BreAnn!
What is your favorite thing about writing for children?
My favorite thing about writing for children is the excitement and bonding time children and parents have with books. Recent studies have been published that say that you should read to your children from birth, and as a writer, teacher, and mother I know this to be true. Reading is a magical thing that can transport you to other places and give you opportunities in your life that you couldn’t experience without the gift of reading. I love reading aloud to my class and watch them giggle, frown, and smile as they listen to a character’s journey.
When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in elementary school we had a place call Publishing Shop where we could publish our stories. Parents would come in and volunteer their time and we would get to use smelly markers, wall paper, tape, and a binding machine to create our masterpiece! It was so wonderful to joyfully carry our masterpiece home to share with our families.
What is your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt?
My favorite flavor would be salted caramel with lots of fresh raspberries on top! It is always fun to eat frozen yogurt with my son. He gets extra sprinkles on top!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I knew that I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was 7 years old. Teaching is the best job because you get to work with adults and children. You always know the new books of the season. You get to be creative and fun even though you are dressed up. I also get to use my writing skills everyday. When I was little I would teach my sisters in our playroom using crayons and coloring books.
If you had any superpower, what would it be?
If I had a superpower it would be the power to be in many places at once. As a mom, coach, teacher, author it feels like there is never enough time in the day!
Other than your own, what is your favorite book of 2014 so far?
One of my favorite books this year is The Pigeon Needs a Bath by Mo Willems. I love reading books with my son, Lucas. This book has humor, colorful illustrations, and introduces word bubbles and motion marks. Children go through cycles where they love getting a bath and hate getting baths so they can relate to the pigeon’s dilemma.
About the Author:
I am a messy writer and my growing list of ideas are usually crocheted in my head over time until I furiously put them to paper (or screen).
I began my career when I was 7 I believe. I knew I wanted to be a teacher as I sat at rummaged desks and instructed my sister to do a puzzle. One of my favorite pictures is of 1st grade me sitting in front of the class reading a book. I’m the oldest of 5 children so I played mom and teacher a lot in my lifetime.
While attending college, I was a teacher in a toddler room where I grew to love the age, the development, and the dimply hands! I also taught Preschool.
When I graduated with my degree in Early Childhood I got a job at a private school where I learned a lot about inquiry based learning and how much third graders still loved to play.
I am currently a teacher at a public school.
I have an energetic toddler son, whom I will refer to as L.
I wrote a book about him called Play? Yay! You can learn more about that book here: Book Link.
