By now, we are all aware of the devastation left behind by Hurricane
Sandy. With the many fundraisers and relief efforts underway, like so
many others, I wanted to do something…to give in some way that would
make a difference. During my many hours of researching relief
organizations, I stumbled across the website for Urban Librarians Unite.

in some areas of New York City were hard hit by the storm and many
communities which we serve have been devastated. There are a number of
libraries in Queens which have suffered extensive damage and whose
collections have been wiped out. When libraries are flooded the books on
the low shelves (where little hands can reach them) get hit the worst.”
Urban Librarians Unite is calling on friends and supporters to
help them build a new collection of materials for NYC libraries as well as
putting books directly into the hands of young victims of this storm.
As avid readers, we know the amazing abilities of books. A book can
take us away from any problems that we may be experiencing, transporting
us to another time, another place, bringing a smile to our heart, if
only for a brief time. For so many of these children, those moments
are priceless. While their parents are busy with clean up, re-building,
or perhaps re-locating, these children need something special to pass
This has quickly become a cause dear to my heart. And I hope many of
you will join me. Urban Librarians Unite is currently accepting new and
“gently used” Children’s Books, as well as monetary donations. So
please, ask your family, friends, co-workers, fellow students, and
neighbors to help.
